Alex Eala Storms Past Jessica Pegula – After The Storm Passes – To Win First WTA Title In Washington

August 3, 2026 by tennisbloggers Leave a Comment

by Bob Stockton

Some finals are decided in straight sets on a dry afternoon. This one took two days, three rain delays, and a third-set bagel to settle

Alexandra Eala is the champion of the Mubadala DC Open, and she earned every hour of it. The 21-year-old Filipina came back from a set down to beat top seed and world No. 3 Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 in a final that started Sunday afternoon, got swallowed by thunderstorms not once but twice, and finally finished Monday — a fitting climax to a week that had already delivered Eala’s biggest scalp yet, a win over Naomi Osaka in the semifinals.

The match was never going to be simple. Scheduled for a noon start on Sunday, it didn’t get underway until roughly three o’clock as storms rolled through the Washington area. When play finally began, Pegula looked every bit the No. 3 seed, breaking twice to close out the first set 6-4 and building a foothold that seemed to be growing into control. She led 1-2 in the second when the skies opened again. Play was suspended just before 4 p.m., and after hours of waiting and a hopeful re-opening that never quite materialized, organizers called it for the night around 9 p.m. Eala and Pegula would have to finish what they started — on Monday.

Whatever nerves the delay might have stirred up, Eala didn’t show them when the players returned to Stadium Court. She steadied the second set, leveling it at 6-4 to force a decider, and then produced the kind of tennis that turns a good week into an unforgettable one. The third set wasn’t close. Eala swept it 6-0, breaking down a suddenly error-prone Pegula and finishing the biggest win of her career in front of a stadium that had turned unmistakably pro-Eala, thick with Filipino flags and noise.
It’s Eala’s first WTA-level title, and it arrives at a career-high moment — she’ll rise further up the rankings off the back of a run that included wins over a top-4 seed in Osaka and now a win over the world No. 3 in the final. For a player who was ranked outside the top 140 barely a year ago, the trajectory has been staggering.

For Pegula, Washington has long been personal — this is the tournament where she won her very first WTA title back in 2019, and she’d returned to the final for the first time in seven years hoping to add a second trophy on the same court. Instead, she’ll leave with a tougher story: a match she led for the better part of two rain-soaked days, lost in a stretch where nothing went right in the decider.

Rain delays have a way of exposing character as much as they interrupt a scoreline, and Eala’s response — regrouping overnight, then dismantling a set higher-ranked opponent 6-0 in the decider — says plenty about where her game is heading. A maiden title against a top-3 player, won the hard way, is exactly the kind of result that turns a breakout season into a full arrival on tour.

US Open To Host Mixed Doubles Championship During Its Lead-Up “Fan Week” Starting In 2025

February 11, 2025 by Randy Walker Leave a Comment

The USTA has reimagined and elevated the focus on the US Open Mixed Doubles Championship by moving it to the first week of the US Open – Fan Week – to be played Tuesday, August 19–Wednesday, August 20. With the Mixed Doubles Championship no longer played during the main draw of singles play, a blockbuster field of the sport’s biggest stars have a greater opportunity to team up to vie for this coveted Grand Slam title and a $1M winner’s prize. The Mixed Championship will take center stage over two days of competition in Arthur Ashe Stadium and Louis Armstrong Stadium. With the shift also comes more opportunities for fans everywhere to enjoy watching their favorite stars compete for another Grand Slam title, with planned first-time primetime ESPN and international broadcast coverage of the Championship.

“I could not be more excited to introduce this groundbreaking innovation to the 2025 US Open Championships,” said Lew Sherr, USTA Executive Director and CEO. “We’ll be scheduling mixed doubles on the center stage and enabling more fans worldwide to enjoy the thrill of watching their favorite stars compete for this coveted Grand Slam Championship title. One of the primary reasons the US Open is among the premier sports events in the world is because it features the best athletes, both male and female, competing on an equal stage. This is the official US Open Mixed Doubles Championship, and by giving the competition its own spotlight we’re elevating mixed doubles to put an even greater focus on the incredible talent we have across the sport. We’re working closely with top players, many of whom are eager to be part of this historic change. Having our broadcasting partners, including ESPN, onboard to showcase this innovation only adds to the excitement, ensuring that fans everywhere will get to witness these elite athletes team up and redefine the game together.”

Tennis is the only professional sport where women and men compete together on the same court for equal prize money in a major championship. The 2025 US Open Mixed Doubles Championship continues this tradition, now featuring top singles players. Excitement is high among the game’s top stars who have already expressed intent to compete in this reimagined format, made possible by the shift to week one (Fan Week) where it will not overlap with the main draw singles competition.

Jessica Pegula said, “As a player who enjoys competing in doubles, I’m excited for the opportunity to play the 2025 US Open Mixed Doubles Championship during the first week. I appreciate the importance of innovation and exploring new ways to engage more fans and grow our sport.”

Taylor Fritz added, “Mixed doubles is always a great challenge, and I’ve had some amazing experiences with it over the years, from the Olympics to the United Cup, and even the USO Mixed Madness last year. I’m definitely looking forward to the chance to compete for a Grand Slam title in the future.”

The reimagination of the 2025 US Open Mixed Doubles Championship comes following the tremendous success of the 2024 US Open Mixed Madness in Arthur Ashe Stadium, won by Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas. Substantial attendance figures, along with enthusiasm from broadcast partners and positive feedback from players, partners and fans showed the desire for a showcase of top players in this format. Innovations include:

  • A player field featuring 16 teams – eight teams earning direct entry based on their combined singles ranking and eight wild-card entries.
  • Best-of-three-set matches with short sets to four games, no-ad scoring, tiebreakers at four-all and a 10-point match tiebreak in lieu of a third set.
  • The final will be a best-of-three set match to six games, featuring no-ad scoring, with tiebreakers at six-all and a 10-point match tiebreaker in lieu of a third set.
  • All matches played in Arthur Ashe Stadium or Louis Armstrong Stadium.

“We are pleased to offer prime time coverage of this novel and unique development in Grand Slam tennis. The reimagined US Open Mixed Doubles Championship brings the blended intensity and camaraderie of mixed doubles to a wide ESPN audience,” said Tim Bunnell, senior vice president of programming & acquisitions, ESPN. “It is an ideal fit for US Open Fan Week programming, and a compelling momentum builder to the main draw. We applaud and eagerly anticipate this innovative effort by the USTA.”

Fans, Players, Partners, Broadcasters All Share the Benefits of this Reimagined Format

  • Sports’ biggest stars on the court – The world’s best players will now have an opportunity to compete for a coveted Mixed Doubles Grand Slam title, a multi-million dollar purse, and a $1 million prize to the winning team. Additionally, a condensed format for the US Open Mixed Doubles Championship will better accommodate players’ schedules while providing greater opportunities for fans and broadcasters.
  • Dedicated spotlight on mixed doubles – Previous US Open Mixed Doubles Championships have been overshadowed by simultaneous singles and doubles match play, limiting live viewership and lowering the appeal for primetime broadcasts that would otherwise reach a wider and global audience. Additionally, all matches will now be played in Arthur Ashe and Louis Armstrong Stadiums signaling the importance and priority of this exciting championship competition.
  • Primetime and international broadcast coverage brings the championship to more viewers worldwide – Semifinals and Finals will air live on ESPN2 in primetime. The first and second rounds will be across ESPN2, ESPNEWS and ESPN+. All MXD matches will be made available to Global Broadcasters, including Sky, Eurosport, and WOWOW. All matches will be available to International Broadcasters (World Feed).
  • Inspiring more fans to pick up a racquet – Bringing mixed doubles to a wider audience is a great way to inspire more people to pick up a racquet. Many Americans already play doubles recreationally and when given the chance to watch the best players in the world teaming up, we believe this will encourage even more to play.

Wimbledon Day Nine Picks – Will A Novak Djokovic vs. Jannik Sinner Semifinal Happen?

July 10, 2023 by tennisbloggers Leave a Comment

We are excited that our win-loss record is 20-4 through the first eight days, with three of the four losses being five-set matches and the other being affected by a player’s injury. Here’s our picks for Day nine!

Jessica Pegula vs. Marketa Vondrousova

This will be a fascinating match with Pegula’s compact strokes against the loopy, wing-span-ish style of Vondrousova. The Czech is definitely a hard out and has an Olympic silver medal and a Roland Garros runner-up on her resume, but Pegula will persist to reach her long-awaited for major semifinal. Pegula is still alive in the doubles with Coco Gauff, which is keeping her sharp.

Jannik Sinner vs. Roman Safiulin

This is an easy pick. It’s like taking Secretariat to show at the Belmont Stakes. Jannik Sinner is on a collision course with Novak Djokovic in the semifinals, which will be a corker.

Novak Djokovic vs. Andrey Rublev

There is no stopping the Novak Djokovic train. Rublev could sneak a set, but bank on Djokovic to face Sinner in the semifinals.

Wimbledon Day Five Picks – Will Stan Wawrinka Spoil The Novak Djokovic Grand Slam Dream?

July 6, 2023 by tennisbloggers Leave a Comment

Denis Shapovalov vs. Liam Broady

Liam Broady gave British tennis fans much to cheer with his Centre Court upset win over No. 4 seed Casper Ruud. It was the moment of Broady’s career – and he only has a little over 24 hours to savor it, comes to grips with it and prepare for another massive task in playing former Wimbledon semifinalist Denis Shapovalov. Broady will leave Wimbledon with his head held high and a lot of pride and increased confidence, but his run ends with a loss to Shapovalov.

Jessica Pegula vs. Elisabetta  Cocciaretto

Jessica Pegula has never reached the fourth round of Wimbledon. She plays a relative unknown Italian in Elisabetta Cociaretto to move into the last 16 at the All England Club for the first time. She will do it, which is not much of a surprise but it will be a correct prediction.

Carlos Alcaraz vs. Alexandre Muller

Playing the world No. 1 on Centre Court is a big occasion. Muller won’t rise to it. Alcaraz in straights.

Stan Wawrinka vs. Novak Djokovic

People who dislike Novak Djokovic will be rooting hard for Stan Wawrinka to upset Novak Djokovic. Wawrnka has spoiled some big parties for Djokovic in the past at the Australian Open, French Open and the U.S. Open. However, in this first meeting between the two on grass and at Wimbledon, no Djokovic party will be spoiled. Wawrinka may sneak a set, but Djokovic wins in either three tight sets or four sets.

Top American Tennis Star Jessica Pegula Signs With Ready

August 31, 2022 by Randy Walker Leave a Comment

Ready® Signs Top Ranked American Tennis Star

Ready®, one of the fastest growing sports nutrition brands in America, today announced the signing of WTA tennis star, Jessica Pegula–the 8th ranked player in the world and the top ranked American female–as a Ready® athlete.  She joins fellow Ready® team members NFL star and world champion Aaron Donald and NBA great and global basketball icon Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Pegula has been a steady riser on the WTA tour and Grand Slam circuit since her debut in 2011-12.  Her determination and effort to join the elite of women’s tennis has paid off in 2022 with her ascension to a career-high WTA singles ranking of No. 7 in singles and a career-high doubles ranking of No. 6.  Her and partner Coco Gauff will be one of the favorites for the double’s championship at The US Open.

The Buffalo native has won one WTA singles title and two WTA doubles titles, one WTA Challenger doubles title, and seven ITF doubles titles. She is a three-time Grand Slam singles quarterfinalist, having reached this stage twice at the 2021 and 2022 Australian Open and once at the 2022 French Open. She is also a Grand Slam finalist in doubles, achieving this feat at the 2022 French Open with Gauff.

“We’re very selective on who we sign as members of our Ready® Team Roster,” said Pat Cavanaugh, Ready® founder and CEO.   “We look for people who take more pride in their hard work than their talent. Beyond athletic excellence, we love seeing someone be relentless in their journey to make their best, better. Jess’s grit and determination over the last 10 years to grind and improve her game to reach her goals and her current world ranking is a great testament to her mentality and the kind of mindset that defines our Ready® Brand.”

“I am really excited to partner with Ready®, a sports drink and nutrition company that helps me stay prepared on and off the court,” said Pegula.  “I put tremendous pride into my team, my training, and what I put into my body.”

When I first tried Ready®, the products stood out to me above everything else out there.  As Pat and I continued conversations, we shared philosophies on hard work and determination to continue moving forward no matter what life throws at us.  Seeing the athletes that Ready® is currently working with, Aaron Donald and Giannis Antetokounmpo, it’s an honor to join two champion athletes and be the first female athlete partner of Ready®.”

Ready® sports nutrition products will continue to fuel Pegula that she’s been using for the past year in her workouts and training. She will promote the Brand and its portfolio of scientifically formulated, performance products in her various online and non-digital platforms.
