Casper Ruud Named To Team Europe For 2025 Laver Cup

July 31, 2025 by Randy Walker Leave a Comment

Casper Ruud will return for his fifth straight Laver Cup appearance, joining Team Europe for this year’s event, taking place at Chase Center in San Francisco from September 19–21, 2025.

The Norwegian star, who captured the Madrid Open title earlier this season, will line up alongside World No.2 Carlos Alcaraz, World No.3 Alexander Zverev, and World No.9 Holger Rune under the leadership of newly appointed Team Europe captain, Yannick Noah. The final two European players will be announced in the coming weeks.

Three-time Grand Slam finalist Ruud made his Laver Cup debut in Boston (2021) and has been an integral part of the team ever since, competing in London (2022), Vancouver (2023), and Berlin (2024). He holds a 4-2 win-loss record in the competition.

“The Laver Cup is incredible, bringing together Europe, with its rich tennis history, to take on the rest of the world,” said Ruud.

“I love representing Europe, and doing my best for the whole continent, not just my country. The team aspect is unique – getting to play alongside guys who are usually my rivals and to support each other is something we don’t experience often.”

“I’m also really looking forward to playing in front of Yannick Noah and Tim Henman for the first time – they are a dynamic duo and it’s going to be really cool. And, I’m excited to visit San Francisco for the first time. I’m a big Golden State Warriors fan, so playing in Chase Center will be something special.”

Noah welcomed Ruud’s return, praising the 26-year-old’s consistency and spirit.

“Casper is a great competitor who brings experience, passion and composure to the team environment,” said Noah. “He understands the spirit of the Laver Cup and is exactly the kind of player you want by your side. I’m delighted he’s back.”

Across the net, Team World, led for the first time this year by eight-time Grand Slam champion Andre Agassi, promises to provide fierce competition as they look to capture their third Laver Cup. Their lineup so far includes American trio – Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton and Tommy Paul – alongside rising Brazilian star João Fonseca, with two further players to be named ahead of the US Open.

Now in its eighth edition, the Laver Cup pits six of the best men’s tennis players from Europe against six of their counterparts from the rest of the World in a thrilling three-day competition.

Played on a dramatic black court, the competition rotates host cities between Europe and the World annually. Each team’s six players must all compete in one singles match during the first two days, and no more than two during the three-day competition. At least four of the six players must play doubles. Each match win is worth one point on Friday, two points on Saturday, and three points on Sunday, with the first team to reach 13 points winning the Laver Cup.

The 2025 edition of Laver Cup marks the event’s first appearance on the U.S. West Coast, with the state-of-the-art Chase Center, home of the seven-time NBA Champion Golden State Warriors and WNBA’s Golden State Valkyries, set to host tennis for the first time.
A limited number of tickets for Friday and Sunday are still available via Ticketmaster, the official ticketing partner of Chase Center.

Laver Cup To Return To O2 In London In 2026

May 21, 2025 by Randy Walker Leave a Comment

London has been confirmed as the host city for the ninth edition of the Laver Cup, with the event set to return to The O2 from September 25-27, 2026.

The venue was the scene of one of the most unforgettable moments in tennis history when Roger Federer brought his legendary career to a close at the 2022 edition of the Laver Cup in front of a packed London crowd alongside his longtime rivals Rafa Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray.

The O2, is the world’s most popular live entertainment, leisure, and retail destination and has been visited by over 100 million people since opening in 2007. Its iconic arena welcomes over 200 events a year and was host to the ATP World Tour Finals from 2009 to 2020 as well as the Laver Cup in 2022. Beyond tennis, The O2 has staged global superstars such as Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Madonna, Adele, Elton John, Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones and has hosted major events including The BRIT awards, UFC, NBA games and World Championship Boxing.

“We are thrilled to be bringing the Laver Cup back to London, one of the world’s great sporting cities,” said Laver Cup Chairman and TEAM8 CEO Tony Godsick. “London set a new benchmark in 2022, delivering one of the most successful and emotional editions of the event to date.”

“While we’ve traditionally taken the Laver Cup to new cities around the world each year, the response from London – from fans, partners and players – was truly overwhelming. The appetite to see Laver Cup return was impossible to ignore, and we’re excited to once again bring this unique tennis event back to The O2.”

Federer, 20-time Grand Slam Champion and Laver Cup co-founder, is also looking forward to returning to The O2.

“My final match in 2022 was filled with emotion and unforgettable memories – being surrounded by my teammates who were also my greatest rivals – it was everything I could have hoped for,” said Federer. “I’m really looking forward to returning to such a meaningful place, this time as a fan, and experiencing the incredible Laver Cup atmosphere once again.”

Named in honor of Australian tennis legend Rod Laver, the Laver Cup pits six of the best
men’s players from Europe against six of their counterparts from the rest of the World over
three days of intense team competition. The event is played on a dramatic black court that will be constructed within The O2.

Since its debut in Prague in 2017, the Laver Cup has been staged in Chicago (2018), Geneva (2019), Boston (2021), London (2022), Vancouver (2023), Berlin (2024) and this year will be held at Chase Center in San Francisco from September 19-21. Team Europe lead the head-to-head 5-2 and the London 2026 edition will mark the fifth time Europe has held the ‘home advantage’.

“The O2 is a spectacular venue that combines cutting-edge technology, world-class amenities, and an atmosphere that elevates every match,” said Laver Cup CEO Steve Zacks. “It’s the perfect stage for the drama, intensity and camaraderie that define Laver Cup. London also serves as an ideal hub to welcome fans from across Europe and around the world who want to experience this unique event live. We look forward to delivering another incredible experience for fans, players, partners and the global tennis community.”

As the owner and operator of The O2, AEG is equally excited to see the Laver Cup return to London following the success of the event in 2022 and in 2024 at AEG Europe’s Uber Arena in Berlin.

“We’re delighted to host the Laver Cup once again and welcome the tennis world back to The O2,” said Alex Hill, President and CEO, AEG International.

“The Laver Cup was a huge success for us in 2022 and has become a must-see event on the global sporting calendar. Its return to London will be a celebration of everything that makes sport and this venue so special.”

With its rich sporting legacy and deep connection to tennis, London is a natural setting for the Laver Cup. British fans are renowned for their passion and the appetite for top-level tennis competition has never been stronger.

“London is now the undisputed sporting capital of the world, and I’m absolutely delighted that the Laver Cup is coming to The O2 next year,” said Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan. “This renowned tennis competition has featured many of the greats of the game and it’s an honour for London to become the first city to stage the event twice.”

“London was proud to host one of the most successful and memorable editions of the Laver Cup back in 2022 – where the great Roger Federer bought his glittering career to a close – and we look forward to staging another fantastic competition.”

Team Europe Vice Captain Tim Henman agrees. “British fans are passionate about tennis and the atmosphere at The O2 in 2022 was electric,” said the former British No.1. “I’m really looking forward to being part of the Laver Cup team for the first time this year in San Francisco and even more excited to see it return to London in 2026. It’s a city that lives and breathes sport, and I know the fans will make it another unforgettable occasion.”

Joao Fonseca, Holger Rune To Play 2025 Laver Cup In San Francisco

May 14, 2025 by Randy Walker Leave a Comment

Holger Rune and João Fonseca are the latest players named to compete at this year’s Laver Cup, each making their debut in the competition which will be held at Chase Center in San Francisco from September 19-21, 2025.

The pair join a stellar lineup that already includes Alexander Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz for Team Europe, and Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul and Ben Shelton for Team World.

Rune, currently ranked World No.10, will represent Team Europe under captain Yannick Noah. The 22-year-old Dane, has won five ATP Tour singles titles, reached three Grand Slam quarterfinals and appeared in four ATP Masters 1000 finals, most recently at Indian Wells in March. Last month he defeated teammate and World No. 3 Alcaraz to win the Barcelona Open. Rune was set to make his Laver Cup debut in Vancouver in 2023 but was forced to withdraw due to a back injury.

“It feels amazing to be selected to play for Team Europe in San Francisco this year,” said Rune. “I was so close to playing the Laver Cup a few years ago but unfortunately got injured and couldn’t make it. I knew that if I got the chance to play again, I would be ready and I’m really looking forward to the competition and to visiting San Francisco for the first time. It’s going to be a great atmosphere, and I know from talking to the other players that Laver Cup is one of the most enjoyable competitions of the year. I cannot wait to be part of it.”

Team Europe Captain Noah welcomes Rune to his team. “Holger is a fierce competitor with big-match experience and strong form this season. I know how eager he is to be part of Laver Cup, and he will be a fantastic addition to our team in San Francisco.”

Eighteen-year-old Fonseca from Brazil joins Team World following a breakout season that has made him one of the most exciting young stars in the sport. The reigning Next Gen ATP Finals champion was crowned junior world No.1 in 2023 and broke into the top 100 of the PIF ATP Rankings just 16 months later. He qualified for his first Grand Slam at the Australian Open in January, stunning then world No.9 Andrey Rublev in the opening round, and in February he won his first ATP title in Buenos Aires.

“I am so excited to have been selected to play for Team World at the Laver Cup,” said Fonseca. “I’ve watched the event since I was a kid and always dreamed of playing. To now be on a team with guys like Fritz, Paul and Shelton, and to be coached by Andre Agassi it’s just unbelievable! I will give it everything I’ve got.”

Agassi, who also makes his Laver Cup debut as Team World Captain this year, is delighted the young Brazilian will join the team.

“João is the kind of young talent that makes Laver Cup so special,” said Agassi. “He’s fearless, energetic, has a huge game and loves the big stage. His performance this season shows me he’s ready for this. I’m sure he will thrive in the team environment and I’m really looking forward to working with him and getting to know him better.”
Now in its eighth edition, the Laver Cup pits six of the best men’s tennis players from Europe against six of their counterparts from the rest of the World in a thrilling three-day competition.

The three highest ranked players from Europe and the World, based on their ATP singles ranking as of the Monday following Roland-Garros, receive an automatic invitation to play the Laver Cup. If any one of these players chooses not to participate, the offer is made to another high ranked player. The remaining three places on each team will be ‘Captain’s Picks’ and can be announced any time before the start of the US Open. By naming Rune and Fonseca to their teams right now, Noah and Agassi are committing to use a Captain’s Pick on them if they do not qualify based on ranking.

Laver Cup will visit San Francisco for the first time this year, bringing top-level men’s pro tennis back to the Bay Area for the first time in over a decade. Chase Center, home of the seven-time NBA Champion Golden State Warriors and WNBA’s Golden State Valkyries, will host tennis for the first time.

Look Ahead To A New Look 2025 Laver Cup In San Francisco

September 23, 2024 by Randy Walker Leave a Comment

The 2025 Laver Cup is set to return with a fresh twist, as two tennis icons, Andre Agassi and Yannick Noah, step into new roles as captains, reigniting one of the sport’s greatest team rivalries. Held in the vibrant city of San Francisco from September 19-21, the tournament will once again pit Team World against Team Europe, but this time with a different energy, leadership, and stakes.

Team World, now led by American legend Andre Agassi, is brimming with confidence after a historic win in 2023 under former captain John McEnroe. Agassi, a fierce competitor in his playing days, brings a different style of leadership—strategic and cerebral, with an emphasis on grit and resilience. His presence has invigorated a squad that includes the hard-hitting Félix Auger-Aliassime, the explosive Ben Shelton, and veteran mainstay Frances Tiafoe. For Agassi, this isn’t just about keeping the momentum going from Team World’s breakthrough; it’s about defining an era of dominance.

On the other side, Team Europe, with Yannick Noah as captain, is on a mission to once again claim the title they have had a stead hold on, including their victory in 2024 in Berlin. Known for his passion, charisma, and ability to inspire, Noah is expected to bring a more emotional and dynamic approach to Team Europe’s strategy. Leading the charge on court will be Carlos Alcaraz, Spain’s rising star who has become the face of a new generation. Alongside him, Danish prodigy Holger Rune and the experienced Stefanos Tsitsipas will form the backbone of a team eager to restore European supremacy.

The atmosphere in San Francisco will be electric. Fans at the Chase Center will witness a unique blend of tactical finesse and raw athleticism, as the Laver Cup’s fast-paced format of singles and doubles matches heightens the tension. Agassi and Noah, both known for their emotional intensity on court, will have to balance the technical demands of the game with keeping their players motivated and calm under pressure.

The city’s Bay Area backdrop, renowned for its cultural diversity and love of sports, is a fitting stage for this clash of continents. For Team World, this is home turf, and the crowd will be a crucial factor in their quest to make it back-to-back wins. But Team Europe will not be easily rattled. Team World Finally Wins Laver Cup

Team World rallied to beat Team Europe 13-8 to win the Laver Cup for the first time after five attempts at the 02 Arena in London.

Team World trailed behind 8-4 after the first two days, but won three matches in a row in the last competition day on Sunday to dramatically win the wildly popular team event.

The Laver Cup, held from September 23 to 25, is a men’s tennis tournament played between players from Europe and players from the rest of the world. Each win secures one point on the opening day, two points on day two, and three points on the final matchday. The event was created by Roger Federer and his agent Tony Godsick.

On the final day, Felix Auger Aliassime of Canada paired up with America’s Jack Sock to defeat Italy’s Matteo Berrettini and British veteran Andy Murray 2-6, 6-3 and 10-8 in the doubles match. The 22-year-old then kept his momentum in the singles match, outplaying 21-time major champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia 6-3, 7-6 (3).

Djokovic, 35, admitted that a problem with his right wrist had affected him during the match, but insisted that Aliassime deserved the win with his outstanding performance.

America’s Frances Tiafoe eventually sealed the overall victory for Team World as the 24-year-old came from behind to beat Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece 1-6, 7-6(11), 10-8.

Tiafoe, teaming up with Sock, defeated Federer and Rafael Nadal in the doubles match last Friday, and joked that he would not apologize to the Swiss legend as the 20-time Grand Slam winner not only ended his professional tour journey with a loss, but had no chance to lift the Laver Cup with Team Europe.

“He has got a lot to apologize for the last 24 years after beating everybody on the tour,” quipped Tiafoe.

Federer, 41, announced his retirement last week and decided to play his last pro match together with long-time rival and friend Nadal at the Laver Cup.

“Being on court on Friday and having such a huge moment in my career, being surrounded by my biggest rivals like Novak and Andy and Rafa was truly unique, and I can never thank them enough for being there and staying there and going through it with me,” said Federer.

Federer has promised he will be on site at the 2023 Laver Cup in Vancouver, Canada to cheer for both teams as a fan.  ■
