Ben Shelton, Alexander Zverev Power Into Munich Semifinals

April 17, 2026 by Randy Walker Leave a Comment

(by Florian Heer)

Top two seeds stay on course as Flavio Cobolli sets up clash with home favourite.

The top two seeds and last year’s finalists, Alexander Zverev and Ben Shelton, continued their strong runs at the BMW Open by Bitpanda, both advancing to the semi-finals in Munich.

On a sunlit Friday at the MTTC Iphitos, Shelton came through a highly anticipated quarterfinal clash against João Fonseca of Brazil, battling to a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory in front of a packed Center Court crowd.

The No. 2 seed of the ATP 500 event struck seven aces and won 84 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after one hour and 49 minutes.

“It was a much warmer day today with shorter rallies,” said Shelton, who enjoyed his first meeting with the 19-year-old Fonseca.

“He is an electric player, one of the rising stars on the tour. It’s a big match for him and there is a lot of excitement around him. He has many fans around the world, and I was looking forward to it, as it’s the type of atmosphere I like to play in. I’d love playing against him in Brazil one day. That’d be really cool.”

Molcan continues Munich run

The 23-year-old American advanced to the semi-finals of an ATP Tour event for the 14th time and will face Slovakian qualifier Alex Molcan on Saturday.

In a battle of left-handers, Molcan defeated Denis Shapovaolov of Canada 6-4, 6-4. The world No. 166 won 57 per cent of the total points played to succeed in 78 minutes.

“At the beginning of the week, I wasn’t even sure if I was getting into the tournament. I took a risk, I came here and made into the main draw,” said Molcan, who became the lowest-ranked Munich semi-finalist since world No. 186 Gerald Melzer in 2015.

“I am playing well. It feels unreal. The last two years were tough. I was struggling a lot. I had to undergo two surgeries, and it was a pretty dark tennis time for me, but I still believed that I could get back to some good level. Last year at this time I was playing Futures, now I am into the semis of an ATP 500. I don’t even know what to say. I am just proud of myself and my team,” the former top 40 player said.

Zverev overcomes Cerundolo

Earlier, top seed Zverev delighted his home crowd with a 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 win over fifth favourite Francisco Cerundolo.

The 27-year-old Argentine overcame a slow start and a double break down to clinch the opening set in just under an hour of play, but Zverev got back on track immediately, taking the match to a decider only 20 minutes later. The world No. 3 from Germany was the more solid player during the longer rallies in the final set and secured victory in two hours and 15 minutes.

“I was 4-1 up in the first set but then he started playing and returning unbelievably,” Zverev said. “My first-serve percentage was very high, and I returned close to the baseline, so there was nothing I could do. I was happy with my level, even in the first set, and I am definitely happy to earn my first win over Francisco on clay.”

Zverev has now reached his fifth tour-level semi-final this season.

“The confidence is there, and maybe I’m staying a bit calmer in certain situations,” Zverev added. “This was probably my best clay-court match of the season so far. Things are moving in the right direction, and I’m very satisfied with myself.”

Cobolli eases past Kopriva

In his fifth Munich semi-final, Zverev will face Flavio Cobolli, who beat Vit Kopriva of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-2. The fourth-seeded Italian dominated the encounter from the outset, breaking his opponent’s serve four times to advance in one hour and 26 minutes.

“It wasn’t easy at all today. We fought for every point. It is always a pleasure to play against him, as he is also a nice guy,” said Cobolli after his first win over Kopriva in the pair’s third meeting, their first on the ATP Tour.

“I played a good match and was positive on court today. I also remained focused in the second set, which can be a problem for me sometimes. The sun came out today and I like to play in these conditions. Now I have to think about the semi-finals, which will be another big match.”

Fonseca Shines In Munich Debut As Zverev Survives BMW Open Test

Release (by Florian Heer)

Fonseca Shines on Debut as Zverev Survives Munich Test
Brazilian teenager impresses in cold conditions, while defending champion battles through and Molcan stuns Bublik at the BMW Open by Bitpanda.
João Fonseca enjoyed a successful debut at the BMW Open by Bitpanda as he claimed a first-round victory on a chilly Tuesday in Munich. With temperatures failing to rise above 10 degrees Celsius (50 °F) at the MTTC Iphitos, the conditions were far from ideal for South Americans, yet Fonseca set the tone early in the day by defeating Alejandro Tabilo in the opening match.
In the pair’s third tour meeting, Fonseca earned his first victory over the Chilean. Supported by many Brazilian fans on Center Court, the 19-year-old from Rio de Janeiro capitalized on three of his seven break-point chances to secure a 7-6(1), 6-3 victory in one hour and 33 minutes.
“I think that I haven’t played in that cold before,” Fonseca said with a smile during his post-match on-court interview. “But it’s great to see so many Brazilian flags here. I am very thankful to be here. I hope they will all be back for the second round.”
Up next for Fonseca will be seventh-seeded Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech.

Zverev battles past Kecmanovic
Meanwhile, Alexander Zverev started his title defence with a hard-fought 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(2) victory over Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia, who had beaten the German earlier in the season in Acapulco. In front of his home crowd, Zverev was a set and a break up but had to fight hard as Kecmanovic improved the longer the match lasted. However, a solid tie-break in the final set helped the top seed close out the match with his 12th ace.
“I was serving poorly the entire match and gave him a lot of looks on my second serve,” Zverev said. “At some point he was playing like a wall, wasn’t missing. The temperatures today didn’t help to play an aggressive style of tennis. It was tough to hit a winner but, in the end, I won and that’s the most important thing.”
Zverev will next take on Gabriel Diallo of Canada.
“He is a massive server,” the three-time Munich champion said of his upcoming opponent. “We are at altitude, which helps the servers, but in these temperatures I don’t know. He had a great first round, which he won quite comfortably. I am expecting a tough match.”
Elsewhere, fourth-seeded Italian Flavio Cobolli defeated German qualifier Diego Dedura, who earned his first tour-level main draw victory last year in Munich. The Italian won 6-4, 7-5 in one hour and 26 minutes.
“It was a very good experience, even though it was a tough draw having to face the world No. 16 right away. But that’s the level here — this is an ATP 500 tournament, not kindergarten. Overall, I’m satisfied with my performance, and now I’m looking ahead to the coming weeks,” said Dedura, who will next compete in the qualifying of the ATP Masters in Madrid.
In the second round of the BMW Open by Bitpanda, Cobolli will face Belgian Zizou Bergs, who was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over German lucky loser Marko Topo.

Molcan masters Bublik
The upset of the day was delivered by world No. 166 Alex Molcan. The 28-year-old Slovakian qualifier knocked out No. 3 seed Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan 6-4, 6-2. Molcan converted four of his nine break-point chances and won 59 per cent of the total points played to advance in one hour and five minutes.
“I am happy to be back at these kinds of tournaments. I always play better at this level than at Challenger events,” said the former top-40 player, who had to deal with injuries and underwent two surgeries in recent years.
“I lost my first set in the opening round of qualifying 6-0 when I was struggling with the conditions here, but then I just found myself, my game, and I improved match by match. Today I was focused during the whole match. I didn’t want to do anything extraordinary on the court. It was a good performance. I am healthy enough to play and just glad to be here. I just try to enjoy the game, and it works.”
Molcan will next play Germany’s Daniel Altmaier, who cruised past Croatian veteran Marin Cilic 6-2, 6-3 in 69 minutes.

Players enjoy their special night
Glitz, glamour and, of course, the stars of the BMW Open by Bitpanda — Monday evening’s Players Night at the Golden Racket Club by Käfer was a resounding success.
Spotted on the red carpet were top players of the tournament, including defending champion Alexander Zverev, American Ben Shelton, Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik and Italy’s Flavio Cobolli. Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas also made sure to attend the Players Night during his Munich debut. With great live music and plenty of good vibes, the celebrations continued late into the night.

Joao Fonseca, Holger Rune To Play 2025 Laver Cup In San Francisco

May 14, 2025 by Randy Walker Leave a Comment

Holger Rune and João Fonseca are the latest players named to compete at this year’s Laver Cup, each making their debut in the competition which will be held at Chase Center in San Francisco from September 19-21, 2025.

The pair join a stellar lineup that already includes Alexander Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz for Team Europe, and Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul and Ben Shelton for Team World.

Rune, currently ranked World No.10, will represent Team Europe under captain Yannick Noah. The 22-year-old Dane, has won five ATP Tour singles titles, reached three Grand Slam quarterfinals and appeared in four ATP Masters 1000 finals, most recently at Indian Wells in March. Last month he defeated teammate and World No. 3 Alcaraz to win the Barcelona Open. Rune was set to make his Laver Cup debut in Vancouver in 2023 but was forced to withdraw due to a back injury.

“It feels amazing to be selected to play for Team Europe in San Francisco this year,” said Rune. “I was so close to playing the Laver Cup a few years ago but unfortunately got injured and couldn’t make it. I knew that if I got the chance to play again, I would be ready and I’m really looking forward to the competition and to visiting San Francisco for the first time. It’s going to be a great atmosphere, and I know from talking to the other players that Laver Cup is one of the most enjoyable competitions of the year. I cannot wait to be part of it.”

Team Europe Captain Noah welcomes Rune to his team. “Holger is a fierce competitor with big-match experience and strong form this season. I know how eager he is to be part of Laver Cup, and he will be a fantastic addition to our team in San Francisco.”

Eighteen-year-old Fonseca from Brazil joins Team World following a breakout season that has made him one of the most exciting young stars in the sport. The reigning Next Gen ATP Finals champion was crowned junior world No.1 in 2023 and broke into the top 100 of the PIF ATP Rankings just 16 months later. He qualified for his first Grand Slam at the Australian Open in January, stunning then world No.9 Andrey Rublev in the opening round, and in February he won his first ATP title in Buenos Aires.

“I am so excited to have been selected to play for Team World at the Laver Cup,” said Fonseca. “I’ve watched the event since I was a kid and always dreamed of playing. To now be on a team with guys like Fritz, Paul and Shelton, and to be coached by Andre Agassi it’s just unbelievable! I will give it everything I’ve got.”

Agassi, who also makes his Laver Cup debut as Team World Captain this year, is delighted the young Brazilian will join the team.

“João is the kind of young talent that makes Laver Cup so special,” said Agassi. “He’s fearless, energetic, has a huge game and loves the big stage. His performance this season shows me he’s ready for this. I’m sure he will thrive in the team environment and I’m really looking forward to working with him and getting to know him better.”
Now in its eighth edition, the Laver Cup pits six of the best men’s tennis players from Europe against six of their counterparts from the rest of the World in a thrilling three-day competition.

The three highest ranked players from Europe and the World, based on their ATP singles ranking as of the Monday following Roland-Garros, receive an automatic invitation to play the Laver Cup. If any one of these players chooses not to participate, the offer is made to another high ranked player. The remaining three places on each team will be ‘Captain’s Picks’ and can be announced any time before the start of the US Open. By naming Rune and Fonseca to their teams right now, Noah and Agassi are committing to use a Captain’s Pick on them if they do not qualify based on ranking.

Laver Cup will visit San Francisco for the first time this year, bringing top-level men’s pro tennis back to the Bay Area for the first time in over a decade. Chase Center, home of the seven-time NBA Champion Golden State Warriors and WNBA’s Golden State Valkyries, will host tennis for the first time.

A limited number of Full Tournament and Multi-Session Ticket Packages are still available via Ticketmaster, the official ticketing partner of Chase Center. Single-Session Tickets go on sale this Friday, May 16, at 10:00AM (PT).

For further updates on player announcements, event updates and ticket presales, fans are encouraged to register as a ‘Laver Cup Insider’ at lavercup.com.

Joao Fonseca: The Future of Brazilian Tennis

February 16, 2025 by tennisbloggers Leave a Comment

At just 18 years old, Joao Fonseca has emerged as one of the most exciting young players in tennis, rapidly rising through the ranks and capturing the attention of fans worldwide. His explosive game, fierce determination, and charismatic personality have drawn comparisons to some of the sport’s biggest names, and his recent achievements suggest he is well on his way to becoming a major force in professional tennis.

Fonseca first made headlines when he won the 2023 U.S. Open junior singles championship and then, almost a year later, made headlines in August 2024 when he became the youngest Brazilian to win an ATP Challenger Tour title, triumphing in Lexington, Kentucky. This milestone signaled his arrival on the global stage, and he has only continued to build momentum since then. At the end of the year, he won the ATP Tour’s “Next Gen” title (open to the best players under the age of 20) in Saudi Arabia.

In early 2025, he cracked the ATP Top 100, making him the youngest player to do so since Carlos Alcaraz in 2021 and the youngest Brazilian ever to achieve this feat. This accomplishment placed him among an elite group of teenage prodigies and set the stage for a promising career.

On February 16, 2025 he won his first ATP singles title in Buenos Aires, Argentina defeating Francisco Cerundolo in the final and moving his ranking into the top 70 in the world.

Fonseca draws inspiration from Gustavo Kuerten, Brazil’s only former World No. 1 and a national icon. Meeting Kuerten for the first time at the Davis Cup in 2023 was a defining moment for him. “He is such an idol—not only for tennis but for Brazilian culture,” Fonseca said, reflecting on the experience.

Brazilian tennis fans have embraced Fonseca with open arms. His matches frequently feature raucous support from Brazilian crowds, with chants of his name echoing through the stands. This passionate backing, combined with his electrifying playstyle, has made him a must-watch player on tour.

Fonseca’s rapid rise has drawn praise from tennis analysts and coaches, with some calling him the best young prospect since Carlos Alcaraz. His ambition matches the hype—he has openly stated that his goal is to become World No. 1, and he is fully committed to putting in the work to get there.

While his journey is just beginning, Fonseca has already proven that he has the talent, mindset, and fan support to make a lasting impact on the sport. With a mix of raw power, tactical intelligence, and a fearless approach to competition, he is poised to carry the torch for Brazilian tennis into the future.

Keep an eye on Joao Fonseca—his story is only getting started.

Joao Fonseca Forecasts His Greatness With NextGen ATP Finals Victory

December 23, 2024 by tennisbloggers Leave a Comment

The 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF reached a thrilling conclusion on Sunday as 18-year-old Joao Fonseca lifted the prestigious trophy in front of a near-capacity crowd in Jeddah.

Fonseca, the youngest player in the tournament and the last to qualify, lived up to his billing as a future superstar by going undefeated and winning the biggest title of his prodigious career. In the final at King Abdullah Sports City, eighth seed Fonseca defeated sixth seed Learner Tien 2-4, 4-3 (10-8), 4-0, 4-2 to conclude an impressive breakthrough year for the 18-year-old Brazilian, who has surged 585 places in the PIF ATP Rankings in 2024.

The final began with a special appearance from Spanish superstar Rafael Nadal, who received enormous cheers from the crowd when he entered the court. Nadal spent three days in Jeddah in his role as the Saudi Tennis Federation (STF) Ambassador, enjoying the city, meeting with Saudi national team players, and hosting coaching clinics for children.

That set the tone for a riveting final that had the packed stadium gripped from start to finish. Tien started brightly, breaking Fonseca’s serve in the first game and that was enough to win the opening set. The players couldnt be separated in the second set, which was decided in a tense tiebreak that saw Tien save four set points before Fonseca, who saved one set point of his own, eventually levelled at the fifth attempt.

If the second set was close, the third was emphatic as Fonseca siezed the momentum to break Tien’s serve twice and claim a 2-1 sets lead in just 12 minutes. The competitiveness returned for the fourth set until Fonseca’s relentless aggression earned the all-important break in the fifth game. From there, it was a matter of holding serve, which Fonseca duly did to win title and become the first Brazilian champion of this tournament.

By clinching the Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF trophy, Fonseca adds his name to an illustrious list of champions, including World No. 1 Jannik Sinner, four-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz, and 11-time ATP Tour winner Stefanos Tsitsipas. He is also the second-youngest winner of the tournament.

Fonseca, 18, said: “I’m so happy to win this match, to win this tournament. I’m very proud of myself. I think back to January, I can’t believe that I just won the Next Gen and all the things I did this year. It’s just amazing the way I improved, not only technically, but physically and mentally. But of course I want more. My dream is to become [world] number one.”

Tien, 19, said: “It was a really good experience. Coming here, getting to see something different outside the US, it was a good week for me. I was really happy just to be able to qualify to be here, so to come here and still have some success against seven other really good players is a big accomplishment and something I’m really proud of.”

It was a fitting conclusion to a remarkably successful tournament in the second year Jeddah has hosted the Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF as part of a five-year partnership between the ATP Tour and the STF.

Arij Mutabagani, Saudi Tennis Federation President, said: “The 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF has been a fantastic success, attracting large and enthusiastic crowds all week. The passion and energy displayed by fans and the hard work of our staff and volunteers has been truly inspiring.

“Alongside the tournament, the community events hosted around Jeddah, led by tennis legend and our Ambassador Rafael Nadal, continue to create more opportunities as we work tirelessly towards achieving our goal of getting one million into tennis by 2030. Events like this are crucial to introducing the sport to the future leaders of Saudi Arabia and building the foundations for future success.”

While the tournament, which featured the eight leading 20-and-under players on the ATP Tour, was the primary focus this week, several more events took place across Jeddah to promote tennis as the STF aims to inspire one million into the sport by 2030.

King Abdullah Sports City was a hive of activity all week with strong crowds throughout that continued to increase, culminating in a packed stadium and an electric atmosphere for the final. The Fan Zone welcomed thousands of visitors every day as families and groups of friends gathered to soak up the occassion and enjoy the many activities on offer.

Within King Abdullah Sports City, an ATF U14 tournament was held featuring some of the brightest prospects in Asian tennis before Saudi Arabia hosted its first ever Wheelchair tennis event.
