Mauresmo, Ivanovic Fall in Zurich

January 31, 2008 by Tennis Grandstand

French Amelie Mauresmo lost in three sets , 2-6 6-4 6-1 to Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko. The French eighth seed was close to victory after winning the first set and having break points to serve for the match but Bondarenko took the that game and the set. In the third set a physically weak Mauresmo tried to finish the points quickly at the net but the Ukranian hit precise passing shots to race 4-0 ahead. The match was soon over after another break.
Mauresmo after losing her last match for the season said she was going to work hard on and off the court to regain her best shape, which she never did all season long after having an appendicectomy early in the season.
In other matches ninth seed Marion Bartoli defeated Dutch Michaella Krajicek 6-4 6-1 while Russian Elena Dementieva, fresh from her title last week in Moscow, had to retire against Italian Francesca Schiavone after trailing 2-4 in the deciding set. To complete the day Serbian world number 4 Ana Ivanovic crashed out unexpectedly against French Tatiana Golovin with the score 6-3 6-1. Ivanovic ended the match with her eighth double faul of the match.
