Martina Hingis Survives First Round Scare

January 31, 2008 by Tennis Grandstand

Martina Hingis survived a scare in the first round of the Wimbledon tournament playing British wildcard Naomi Cavaday in a three set thriller, 6-7 7-5 6-0.
It was Hingis first appearance in 5 weeks. She was sidelined during that time due to a nasty injury. It showed in her match versus Cavaday as she had a hard time in the first set and in the second set even survived 2 matchpoints.
“I don’t see myself right now after today’s match as a contender,” Hingis said.
According to her doctor Hingis’ fitness is rated only at 60% / 70% but Hingis insisted on playing.
“It’s an inflammation in the femur bone. Usually it takes six to eight weeks but I’m like, I don’t want to miss out on Wimbledon no matter what happens,” the former Wimbledon winner said.
“I was happy he told me I can’t make it worse,” Hingis added.
“But I’m happy to be able to run and walk and play tennis again. I wasn’t able to do that five weeks ago.”
Hingis played on the infamous graveyard court. It’s infamy comes from the fact that many many seeded players find their Waterloo on it. The two matchpoints against her woke her up and the British teenager didn’t pose a threat anymore after that as Hingis bageled her in the third set.
“I was just like, ‘no, this is not going to happen to me, not here again at Wimbledon’,” Hingis said.
“I’ve never lost on court two. I know it’s a graveyard of champions but it’s never been to me. I played really good on those two points.
“After that, it was just a pretty smooth ride. Somehow I never felt ‘okay, she’s on top of me’. I was always hanging in there. It was never on my mind that I was going to lose.”

I do believe all of the ideas you have presented on your post.
They’re really convincing and will certainly work. Nonetheless, the posts are too quick
for starters. May just you please lengthen them a bit from
subsequent time? Thanks for the post.
