Jankovic And Kuznetsova Breeze To Quarters

January 31, 2008 by Tennis Grandstand

Jelena Jankovic and Svetlana Kuznetsova have secured a place in the quarters of the Rogers Cup. The numbers 2 and 3 on the list of seeded players both beat their respective opponents in straight sets.
Jankovic defeated Sybille Bammer 6-2, 6-3 while Kuznetsova was too strong for Meghann Shaughnessy 6-3, 6-2.
Jankovic, who was frustrated in the second set with stomach cramps, was surprised by the fireworks show that commenced right after her victory and jokingly wondered if the show was meant for her. She said that was she bothered by a stomache ache but the moment she saw the fireworks she felt better immediately. Jankovic will now meet unseeded French Virginie Razzano.

Today world number one Justine Henin reached with a 7-5 6-2 win over China’s Shuai Peng the fourth round at the Rogers Cup in Toronto.
The topseeded Belgian had to fight not only with her Chinese opponent but also with the windy conditions.
“It was tough I can tell you,” said Justine. “For players it was terrible conditions, it’s tough especially when you don’t have a lot of matches.” Justine needed some games to find her rhythm, but at 5-5 she broke Peng’s serve. After that the Belgian had the control over the match. She won seven of the next nine games and came to a well deserved win. “I was feeling better in the second set, I was a bit more relaxed and could deal a bit better with the conditions. I don’t want to look too far ahead, I’m still in preparation for the US Open and I don’t want to forget that,” Justine told the reporters. “I go match after match, a little mistake can be expensive.”
In the fourth round Russia’s Nadia Petrova is waiting for Justine. The sixth seeded Petrova, who beat Switzerlands Patty Schnyder today in straight sets, was runner up at the East West Bank Classics last week in Los Angeles. Justine should be the clear favorite, because the Belgian won ten of the twelve matches between them so far.
