January 30, 2008 by Tennis Grandstand

Martina Hingis set up a third-round meeting with fourth seeded Elena Dementieva in the second round of the Qatar Telecom German Open after she defeated German Julia Schruff, 6-4,6-3, in just fifty-seven minutes.
Schruff, who upset Elena Dementieva in the first round of the Australian Open earlier this year, drew first blood when she took the first two games of the first set, and in the process, broke Hingis before holding her own serve to lead the scoreboard at 2-0. Meanwhile, Hingis won the next three games in a row to lead the scoreboard into her[I don’t know what this means] at 3-2.  Schruff then leveled the score by holding her serve. Sensing a possible come from behind by Schruff, Hingis went farther in the match when she won the next two games to lead the scores at 5-3. Julia persisted on, winning the next game, and was a game down at 5-4. The first set of the match ended with Hingis breaking Schruff in the end to win the first set of the match at 6-4, in just twenty-eight minutes and twenty-one seconds.
During the second set, the first four games were split between Hingis and Schruff at 2-2 all. A hard-hitting Schruff broke Hingis’ serve in the fifth game to lead the scoreboard at 3-2. Not to be outdone, though, Hingis won the next four games buy holding her serve twice and breaking Schruff’s serve twice to win the second set, 6-3, and the match.
The next round offers Martina a chance to avenge the crushing defeat she got from Elena Dementieva during the final round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Japan earlier this year.
