Biggest Fashion Disasters at the 2013 BNP Paribas Open

March 9, 2013 by tennisbloggers

We’ve all been there: worn something that we wish we hadn’t, only to have pictures of our mistake permanently ingrained on Facebook to haunt us for the rest of our lives. Well, tennis players face the same predicament — just on a much grander scale.
This week at the BNP Paribas Open, we’ve seen some unfortunate apparel disasters from some of tennis’ biggest names, and we’ll give you the full (and hilarious!) rundown, starting with the one and only Jelena Jankovic.
When Jelena Jankovic stepped onto Stadium 2 on Friday, not only did she catch her opponent Svetlana Kuznetsova off guard (she served her first set bagel), but Twitter exploded with puns regarding Jankovic’s kit. Bottom line: When your skirt looks like a legitimate stand-in for the mops at a carwash, you know there’s a problem.

Unfortunately, fellow Fila athlete Julia Goerges suffered the same skirt fate on Saturday during her own second round win. The colors and design of the top are good, but they detract heavily from the unfortunate carwash skirt.

Keeping with the somewhat “cheerleading” theme, Chanelle Scheepers looked more like she belonged on the NBA’s Sacramento Kings dance lineup than a tennis court.

With the drop in temperatures on Friday, the ladies came out in full legging force. While a few of them were able to pull it off (ahem, Maria Sharapova’s was passable), several decided to pair their kits with black leggings, which already had some sort of random design. Marion Bartoli and Francesca Schiavone were two of the worst offenders and the outcome was not pleasant on the eyes in any way, shape or form.

Another legging offender was the usually do-no-wrong Maria Kirilenko, but boy did her legging/skirt combination do A LOT of wrong this time around. When she dipped low in her yellow lizard leggings, it made her legs look like something out of Dr. Seuss book. And the stark delineation between the leggings and shorts make it look all the more extraterrestrial.

Leather on a tennis court is never a goo—- Oh, wait. How did this get in here? Moving along …

In the case of David Nalbandian‘s Topper kit, “X” does NOT mark the spot. It could have done without a few of those criss-crossed lines.

Petra Kvitova may not be debuting this kit at the BNP Paribas Open, but the Nike color block of orange and purple simply don’t work for the Czech lady. From the starry two-tone top to a skirt that doesn’t even match the neon orange on the shirt/sweat bands/shoes, this kit is all wrong for her — or anybody, for that matter. Kvitova has always looked good in simple lines and colors, and this attempt to spice her up has failed miserably. Good form on that wide forehand though, Petra.

Lleyton Hewitt‘s very own clothing line “C’mon” has missed the mark as well. The shoulders take a cue from Andy Murray’s adidas kit, and the frontal design just adds to the confusion. It’s just a little too much going on for any one shirt.

Vania King had the potential to be “pretty in pink” with her kit, but instead her clothing sponsor made her look like she got into a serious fight with a pink tiger, claw marks and all. And I can’t figure out if that skirt is suede or just makes really awkward sweat stains. You decide.

Laura Robson‘s all-white kit is also not new as she wore it at the Australian Open, but that is part of the problem. While the lines themselves are great, the color is what bothers me. Not only should all-white be reserved almost exclusively for Wimbledon, but come summer, adidas will have had Robson in all white all year! What fun is it putting a rising sparkling 19-year-old in a dull tone for that much of the season?

Much like Robson above, Lacoste decided to put John Isner in oversimplified colors: black and white. And what a mistake — it sent him home on his first match in Indian Wells after having reached the final here last year. Lacoste has been doing great yet simple designs the last few years; let’s hope this was just a momentary oversight.

Agree/Disagree? Did I miss any fashion disasters from this year’s BNP Paribas Open? Sound off in the comments below!

Video: Wozniacki, Robson, Kirilenko play on mirrored court for adidas launch

January 13, 2013 by tennisbloggers

January 13, 2013 — Prior to the start of the Australian Open, WTA players Caroline Wozniacki, Laura Robson and Maria Kirilenko took part in the launch of the adidas by Stella McCartney tennis collection by playing on a a very unique surface — a mirrored court!

To globally launch the collection and bring to life its core benefits of style and performance functionality, adidas ambassadors Wozniacki, Kirilenko and Robson played tennis in an environment like no other – the world’s first mirror court. At 11.4m long x 8.5m wide x 3m high, the court offered a living kaleidoscope of moving reflections.
The range will be worn by these ladies (and injured fellow WTA player, Andrea Petkovic) during the 2013 Grand Slams, showcasing its leading design qualities, standout aesthetic and performance functionality.

“I always play better when I feel good, that is very important to me,” says Caroline Wozniacki. “The new adidas by Stella McCartney barricade range makes me feel secure and comfortable on court. The bright color blocking and advanced technology presented in each item I’m wearing gives me the confidence to focus solely on my own performance on court.”
Inspired by the ready to wear collection, the range plays on Stella McCartney’s use of feminine lines that flatter and enhance the female form on court. Prices range from $80 for the adidas by Stella McCartney barricade Tank and Skirt which Andrea Petkovic and other players will wear; $150 for Caroline’s Wozniacki’s Dress, and $180 for the adidas adipower barricade footwear.

Below is the video from the event, where the three ladies hit around on the mirrored court and talk about the importance of a good and flirty fit while playing on the tennis court!

Maria Sharapova's love affair with David Koma

January 11, 2013 by tennisbloggers

By Romi Cvitkovic

“Who is David Koma?” you ask.
If you are a tennis buff, he may be as foreign to you as the idea of Caroline Wozniacki winning a Slam. But fashion aficionados have known about this 25-year-old Georgian born London based fashion designer’s transcending style for a while now.
Koma has only been around the fashion elite for a couple of years but he has surely cast a spell on the ever style-conscious Sharapova, who has been seen wearing his creations in cities around the world. The latest appearance of which was at Sharapova’s “Sugarpova” candy collection launch in Australia yesterday.

Koma’s creation is hands down the most stunning dress the statuesque Russian has worn. Ever. In fact, the dress looks infinitely better on Sharapova than the model flaunting it on the runway for his collection. (Something about actual meat on bones?)
Koma has become synonymous with the ultra-body contouring silhouette, creating heavily embellished statement dresses inspired by the femine — and often athletic — form. And the mermaid-styled back of the dress may be even more captivating than the beautiful front.

No matter who you are — even Maria Sharapova — you don’t put on bold statement dresses like this one on your first outing. She started out subtler last year and her eye for his designs has grown.
During her American “Sugarpova” launch and media blitz in New York City last August, Sharapova doned a couple of his creations. During the daytime, she was sweet, hip and young in a collared white number.

And by night, she sent jaws dropping to the floor. Here she is in a signature silk black dress during her appearance on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.”

It’s safe to say that Maria Sharapova and David Koma are a dream made in fashion heaven!
Although his upcoming Spring 2013 line is vibrant, a heavy subset includes white silhouettes with gorgeous details — just in time to sport some more of his collection during Wimbledon! You heard it hear first!

Adidas tennis fashions for Roland Garros with Verdasco, Ivanovic, Rus and others

May 24, 2012 by tennisbloggers

By Romana Cvitkovic

Just in time for the tennis season’s second Slam of the year, the adidas team has revealed the fashions that will be on display at Roland Garros for their top athletes, including Ana Ivanovic, Fernando Verdasco, Andy Murray, Gilles Simon and their youngest sensation, 21-year-old Arantxa Rus from Holland.
A few things of note:
1. I like lime and I like orange, but I’m not fully sold on the combination for Ana Ivanovic’s dress. Even with the red clay, it might be an eye sore…
2. Fernando Verdasco’s face in his second photo below is absolutely priceless. Compare that with the first saucy photo, and I laugh every time I see it. But somehow both are fitting for his personality.
3. Arantxa Rus looks like a mini-Wozniacki in these photos, but I love the air around her as a player. Great potential, and the yellow and  blue kit combination with the ruffled tank works. I also LOVE the accents on her shoes.
4. Andy Murray, is that you? Looking more like a gladiator than a tennis player, he doesn’t have a knack for posing. While I like the orange shorts, the grey color seems a bit too muted on him.
5. Andrea Petkovic, oh, how I miss you … already. Skipping Roland Garros to nurse an injury, her blue and orange kit will probably be worn by Maria Kirilenko among others, but the German’s fire will be missed in Paris.
6. Gilles Simon’s baby blue collared shirt looks more fitting for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, but I’ll let it slide because of the Frenchie smile.
All in all, the kits and colors look great and I’m excited to see them on the red clay of Roland Garros. For larger higher quality photos, click on the photos to expand.
