After tips from several media sources, including Tennis Channel’s own Brett Haber, Washington Capitals left winger and captain Alex Ovechkin confirmed his engagement to the beautiful Maria Kirilenko via his Twitter account today.

The two athletes have been dating since at least November 2011 when Ovechkin introduced his new girlfriend and “queen” Maria to his Twitter followers.

The 25-year-old tennis beauty had a breakout year in 2012, reaching a career-high No. 12 in the rankings, so the Russian hockey player must have been doing something right. Throughout the year and due to the NHL lockout, Ovechkin was often seen in Kirilenko’s player box at tournaments, cheering, fist-pumping and being an all-around awesome fan boy. They took in the “City of Love” in May during Roland Garros, showed off Kirilenko’s bronze medal from the London Olympics, and easily know how to enjoy each other’s company no matter the setting.
In a recent feature for NTV, Ovechkin’s father Mikhail revealed his high hopes for the young couple. “God help that everything will be good for them,” he said. “Hopefully, they come to the decision to get married, get engaged, and bring us little Ovechkins.”
