LUXEMBOURG — Four seeds went tumbling out of the Luxembourg Open today, including Julia Goerges in her loss to Monica Niculescu, Sorana Cirstea to Ksenia Pervak and Mona Barthel to Venus Williams in a close two-set match that frustrated both players. (See photo gallery below)
Jelena Jankovic also lost to good friend Andrea Petkovic en route getting bageled in the second set. An official tournament injury report states that Jankovic suffered from “non acute gastrointestinal illness” but was able to finish the match. She did however withdraw from her scheduled doubles match with partner Barthel, giving the team of Vera Dushevina and Olga Govortsova a walkover into the semifinals.
Petkovic also partnered up with Bethanie Mattek-Sands to defeat the No. 4 doubles team of Petra Martic and Mandy Minella to reach the semifinals where they will take on the No. 1 team of Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka.
