Venus Williams has won Wimbledon 2007. It is her 4th Wimbledon victory in the last 8 years. In order to lift the Wimbledon crown Williams had to beat French revelation Marion Bartoli. Williams succeeded in 2 sets, 6-4 and 6-1.
Williams has won 1 million euros (1,36 million USD) and a top 15 spot in the WTA rankings. Before Wimbledon Venus was 31st on the list but with the 1000 points she won this afternoon she made a quantum leap.
Williams is the 4th player in the last 40 years who has managed to win Wimbledon 4 times or more.
In the first set both Williams and Bartoli were pretty much equal. The Frenchwoman did not appear nervous at all in her first ever Grandslam finale despite the fact that she got broken in her first servicegame of the match.
She recovered quickly but 1st set was for Venus Williams who broke Bartoli’s service again at 5-4.
Bartoli managed to come back in her previous matches versus Henin and Krajicek but was unable to pull that off versus Williams. In the second set Bartoli’s serve was broken again immediately. At 3-0 Williams was treated for injury for 6 minutes but even after that she still had the upperhand. Even breaking Bartoli for a second time.
A not completely fit Williams proved to be a too strong for Bartoli today. She served strongly and spread the balls really well making it hard for Bartoli to get in her game.
The double break was more than enough for Williams to win the second set with 6-1 and lift the Wimbledon trophy for the 4th time in her career.
