Maria Sharapova beat Camille Pin 6-3 4-6 9-7 in the first round of the Australian Open. The match lasted 171 minutes.The first set started with Maria winning the first two games. Camille came back to win the next two games to even the set. The two grand slam winner then won the next two games to go up 4-2. The unseeded Pin won the next game but didn’t win another game. Maria won the set 6-3 in 47 minutes.
The second set also started with the first 4 games being split but this time the top seed was broken going down 2-3. The rest of the set both players held serve with Pin winning the set 6-4. The set last for 41 minutes.
The final set started with Maria winning the first 5 games. Pin came back and won the next 5 games to even the set. The top seed then held serve and was then tied at 6 all. Camille then won the next game to go up 7-6. Sharapova then tied it up at 7 all. The Russian won the next point going up 8-7. Maria won the next game to take the match. The final set lasted 83 minutes.
Maria had 65 unforced errors in the match. She also had stomach craps in the third set and called out the trainers.
“It was definitely one of the toughest matches I have ever played,” she admitted afterward.
“It not best tennis I have ever played, I hope to improve a lot, and I certainly hope I can recover,” she added with a relieved and exhausted smile.
The second round Maria will play Anastassia Rodionova. Rodionova beat Roberta Vinci 6-3 6-1.
