Maria Sharapova lost to Serena Williams 1-6 2-6 in the Australian Open final. The match lasted 62 minutes
The first set Serena jumped out to win the first five games. Maria held serve but that would be the game she won. The set lasted 26 minutes.
The second set started with Williams racing out to win the first four games. The next 4 games where on serve giving Serena the championship. The set lasted 36 minutes.
“You can never underestimate her as a performer. .. I know what she’s capable of and she showed that today,” Sharapova said. “She has showed it many, many times.
“Unfortunately I couldn’t hold the big (trophy) today, but I’m holding the second big one. I look forward to coming back next year and hopefully taking the big one.”
Maria moved to the number 1 ranking and will next play in Tokyo.
