Many exciting matches were played today at the East West Bank Classic. With the great players of Martina Hingis, Marion Bartoli, Sania Mirza, Elena Dementieva, Shahar Peer, Ai Sugiyama, and Katarina Srebotnik. There were upsets, great matches, exciting points, and fans definitely had a great day watching.
Marion Bartoli was unable to beat the Russian star Maria Kirilenko as she continues her impressive wins. Maria defeated Marion in straight sets 7-6 (7-2) 6-3. As Maria continues to find her form and win, Martina Hingis has been struggling to win ever since she came back from injury last week. She lost yet again in the early round of this tournament against India’s Sania Mirza. Hingis did not give up hope though as she made Sania take a run for her money, but in the end, Hingis lost in 3 sets 6-2 2-6 6-4.
Another upset was in session as Kateryna Bondarenko defeated Dinara Safina in straight sets 6-2 7-5 while Gisela Dulko had no trouble defeating Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-1 6-3. Michaella Krajicek defeated Ukrainian Yuliana Fedak 6-4 6-3 in straight sets.
Elena Dementieva defeated Ekaterina Makarova in straight sets as well 6-3 6-1 and Shahar Peer defeated Dominika Cibulkova 6-2 6-3. Katarina Srebotnik defeated Bethanie Mattek 6-4 7-5. Victoria Azarenka defeated Alberta Brianti 6-3 6-3, while Lilia Osterloh upset Australia’s Alicia Molik in straight sets 6-2 6-4.
Shuai Peng defeated Yaroslava Shvedova 6-3 6-4 while Mara Santangelo took out Anastasia Rodionova 6-1 7-6 (7-3).
Ai Sugiyama and Camille Pin definitely had the crowd excited for this match as it went to three sets. Both players would not let up the first set but Camille Pin took it. After that, it was all Ai Sugiyama. 3 exciting sets. Game Set Match Ai Sugiyama 5-7 6-3 6-3.
Not only was the Ai Sugiyama match exciting the Eleni Daniilidou and the Aravane Rezai match was a real back and forth as in the three sets, there were breaks that eventually determined the winner. The score does not show how exciting the match is as it was a tough one. In the end, Eleni Daniilidou defeated Aravane Rezai in three exciting sets 3-6 6-2 6-1.
