Maria Sharapova has withdrawn citing a strain in her lower left leg for Saturday’s semifinal of the JP Morgan Chase Open in Los Angeles. Sharapova hopes she will recover soon as she wants to defend her US Open title in 2 weeks.
The injury seems to be the same one she had 2 years ago and if it is she said then she will be recovered in a few days but for now she is unable to even be on the courts for 10 minutes. Sharapova has just recovered from a shoulder injury.
“When I started to warm-up it got worse and worse,” Sharapova said. “I could not run for more than two or three balls.”
“I had it all. Anti-inflammatories, deep tissue massage, an ice bath, I even had acupuncture in my ear,” said Sharapova.”I’m not going to sit here and say this or that is the cause because I don’t know.”
Sharapova announced earlier that she has withdrawn from the Rogers Cup in Toronto next week.
Nadia Petrova grudgingly benefitted from Sharapova’s injury.
“I was really looking forward to playing a big match because it was about time to play someone who has won a lot of titles and won a lot of grand slams,” Petrova said.
Petrova will now face Ana Ivanovic who defeated fellow countrywoman Jelena Jankovic in the other semi in a tough 3 set match 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
