In one hour, and three minutes, 5th seed Martina Hingis battled past Czech Iveta Benesova, 6-3, 6-2, in their second round match at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, USA. This is the second triumph of Hingis over Benesova in as many meetings.
Hingis and Benesova both held their respective serves in the first set. Earlier in the opening set, Hingis was beset with unforced errors, which Benesova capitalized on to break Hingis’ serve before holding her own serve to go up 3-1. Unfazed by the the score, Hingis regrouped and found her rhythm and turn the game around, winning the next three games to win the first set 6-3.
In the second set, Hingis raced to a 5-0 lead, and was serving for the match. Benesova stepped up her game to slow down Hingis’ imminent triumph, by winning the next two games. Hingis went on to finally close the match out by holding her serve, 6-2.
Hingis next plays Polish Agnieszka Radwanska in the third round.
