Three-time-champion Martina Hingis heads back to Sydney, Australia for this year’s edition of the Medibank International, a Tier II event with a total prize money of $600,000. Leading a strong field of players, is Amelie Mauresmo, seeded first, followed by Svetlana Kuznetsova at number two. Kim Clijsters, Nadia Petrova, are seeded third and fourth respectively. The top four seeds will receive first round byes. Seeded fifth is Martina Hingis, followed by Elena Dementieva, Patty Schnyder, and Nicole Vaidisova at sixth, seventh and eighth respectively.
Hingis faces Serbian Jelena Jankovic who recently won the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand, in the first round. Should Hingis advances further, she might run into Samantha Stosur in the second round. Then, a quarterfinal duel with Mauresmo looms should Hingis beat Stosur. Should this match materialize, Hingis will have the chance to avenge the losses she sustained from Mauresmo last year. Petrova would likely be Hingis’ semifinal opponent in the semifinals should she get past Mauresmo. It would be awesome for Hingis if she could meet Kim Clisters in the final.
