The Bank of the West Classic started today at Stanford California. This event is the Tier II event which features many highlights such as young tennis teen Anna Chakvetadze, Tatiana Golovin and gorgeous Daniela Hantuchova. Patty Schnyder, Marion Bartoli, and Sybille Bammer are also in the mix of this tournament.
For todays first round match ups, Eleni Danniilidou defeated Amber Liu today 4-6 7-5 6-1.
“Amber was getting a little tired and I was way more aggressive than her beginning in the second set,” the 41st-ranked Danilidou said. “I really couldn’t see in the first set; there were shadows on the court.”
Katarina Srebotnik defeated Olga Poutchkova of Russia 6-3 6-4.
China’s Peng Shaui defeated Elena Bovina of Russia in straight sets 6-3 6-4.
“It’s just a good way to start,” Peng said. “(Bovina) hits hard so I tried to hit hard first.”
We also had two American face offs as Meilen Tu defeated Meghann Shaughnessy 7-6(3) 6-1 while in the other American duel, Lilia Osterloh pulled off an upset against fellow American Jill Craybas 6-2 7-5.
“I was happy with the start and I was happy to close it out,” Osterloh said. “It’s so inspiring playing at Stanford and the Bay Area.”
