Another day of tennis means another day of tennis results and round-ups. Today was a very weird day because there were a couple of upsets, and a couple of long exciting matches that got the crowd going. Let’s start with the first match now shall we?
Seeded number four Patty Schnyder defeated Yaroslava Shvedova in straight sets 7-5 6-2 while fifth seeded Shahar Peer was upset by Olga Govortsova in a very exciting three set 4-6 7-5 6-2.
Another seeded player was ousted today. Number six seed Tatiana Golovin lost to Sania Mirza 6-4 6-1 in straight sets.
“Beating a top-20 player is always good, especially beating someone you have never beaten before,” Mirza said. “It is definitely one of my top wins. She is in the top 20 and playing well this year.”
Our top seed at this tournament, Anna Chakvetadze played Eleni Danillidou. This was Anna’s first match since defeating Japan’s Akiko Morigami in the Cincinnati finals. Receiving a first round bye here, AnnaChak hoped to continue her winning success against Eleni Danilidou. Everything went as planned for Chakvetadze as she cruised to the next round beating Danilidou in straight sets 6-4 6-1.
“It was my first match on the court and I didn’t get used to it,” Anna Chakvetadze said. “Yes, it was a slow start and I was moving slowly. Then I just decided to play better.”
