Amelie Mauresmo defeated at the Australian OpenTitledefender Amelie Mauresmo has surprisingly been beaten in the fourth round of the Australian Open. The French lost in two sets versus unseeded Czech Lucie Safarova 6-4,6-3. Svetlana Kuznetsova also stranded in the fourth round.
Second seed Mauresmo collapsed after taking a 4-1 lead in the first set. It was the first time since 2001 that Mauresmo loses in the fourth round of the Australian Open.
It’s amazing. I still can’t believe it,” 19 year old Safarova said directly after the match. “I’m so happy. It’s incredible.”
It is Safarova best result ever in a Grandslam. The number 70 of the WTA Tour rankings will now face fellow countrywoman Nicole Vaidisova who defeated Elena Dementieva of Russia 6-3, 6-3.
It was Safarova’s first time on centre court. “I came out this morning and said, ‘Wow this is a big court.’ But I felt really comfortable here,” She said.

Israelien player Shahar Peer was the second surprise winner of the day when she beat Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.
Serena Williams
Serena Williams continues to rise. She beat in form Serb Jelena Jankovic in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. Williams has made a free fall on the WTA rankings. The two time winner of the Australian Open will now face Shahar Peer in the Quarterfinals of the AusOpen.
